Restoring Active Blanket Bog in Ireland

A nature conservation project jointly funded by EU DG-Environment and Coillte Teoranta (The Irish Forestry Board) under the EU LIFE-Nature Programme. 1967 ha of blanket bog habitat along the western seaboard of Ireland has been restored to more favourable conservation status in the period 2002 to 2007.

LIFE - Nature

LIFE-Nature (The financial Instrument for the Environment) was launched in 1992. It co-finances environmental activities in the European Community and in certain non-Community agreements for this purpose. The Raised Bog Restoration Project has received €1,875,000 (which represents 75% of a total budget of €2,5000,000), this money will be used in the period 2004 - 2008 to implement Project Actions.

Active raised bogs in Denmark has been under great pressure and more than 90% has been lost. Apart from one relative large active raised bog the raised bogs are small and threatened by desiccation caused by former draining and peat excavation, tree encroachment and nutrient enrichment from atmospheric deposition of N or from influx of surface water from neighbouring agricultural areas.

The HeritageCouncil

The Heritage Council was established as a statutory body under the Heritage act 1995. Restoring Priority Woodland Habitats in Ireland

A nature conservation project jointly funded by EU DG-Environment and Coillte Teo. Under the EU LIFE-Nature Programme. The project focuses on the restoration of nine Coillte owned sites (550.8 ha) within the EU Natura 2000 network of sites (SAC’s). There are four native woodland types in this project : Yew woodland, alluvial woodland, woodland associated with limestone pavement, and bog woodland.
